Rank on Google blog cover: Google Maps ranking in Bishopton, who shows up and who isn't local

At the end of September I searched Google Maps for the trades that people around Bishopton, in Renfrewshire, actually hire, from plumbers and electricians to boiler installers and double glazing fitters. For double glazing, not one of the firms ranking on the map was even in Renfrewshire, with every one of them sitting across the Erskine Bridge in another council, while for electricians the local firms owned it outright. So here is who is ranking on Google Maps around Bishopton, trade by trade, why Google does it, and why it is the clearest opening a local business round here has right now.

Who shows up on Google Maps around Bishopton

Start with double glazing, because it is the clearest of the lot. I searched for a double glazing company in Bishopton, then in Erskine, Inchinnan and Houston, four Renfrewshire towns in a row. Every single time, the firms Google put in front of me were based in Clydebank or Old Kilpatrick. That is West Dunbartonshire, across the water, over the Erskine Bridge. Not one Bishopton, Erskine or Inchinnan firm came up, and the same two or three firms kept appearing no matter which town I searched. The only Renfrewshire name in the whole lot was a firm trading as "Paisley" from a unit in Linwood.

Now try a plumber. Search for one in Bishopton and Google hands you a local electrical firm, a local gas engineer, and a listing with no address on it at all. A proper plumber barely gets a look in. The trade is thin round here, so Google fills the slots with whoever is nearby and set up properly, even if their main job is a slightly different one.

Why Google reaches across the Erskine Bridge

Google is doing exactly what it is built to do here. When someone searches for a service, Google looks for the businesses that are closest, most relevant and best set up, and it fills the map with them. When the local firms for a trade have not set their Google Business Profiles up to compete, Google does not leave the spot empty. It reaches to the next firm that has, even if that means jumping across the Clyde into the next council.

The gist of it is, the map around you is never empty. If you are not on it, someone else is, and round here that someone is often not even local. The top spot is not reserved for the nearest business. It is held by whoever has done the work on their profile, full stop.

The trades where a local firm already owns the map

It is not like this for every trade, and that is the important bit. When I searched for an electrician in Bishopton, all three results were Bishopton firms, two with PA7 postcodes and the third named after the village itself, genuinely local. Search for a boiler installer and it is much the same, a Bishopton gas engineer and a Bishopton electrical firm, with a central heating firm just over in Erskine. On those trades the local businesses have claimed their ground, and Google rewards them for it.

So the map is not stacked against a local firm. Where a Bishopton business has set its profile up properly, it sits right at the top where it belongs. Where none has bothered, the door is wide open and a firm from another town walks straight through it. Same town, same Google, completely different result, and the only thing separating the two is the work done on the profile.

What this means if you run a trade near Bishopton

If you run a trade around Bishopton and you are already spending money on ads to get the phone ringing, this should stop you in your tracks. The people searching Google Maps for your service are the warmest leads you will ever get, because they are looking to buy right now, and those calls cost you nothing. If the top of that map is being held by a firm from Clydebank, or by nobody local at all, that is not a problem. That is an opening.

A genuinely local business, with its Google Business Profile claimed and built to compete, takes those spots. That is exactly the job we do, and it is what our local SEO in Renfrewshire page lays out.

How I checked this

The method is simple. I searched Google Maps for each trade on 29 September, centred on Bishopton, and noted the businesses it returned and the addresses on their listings. The towns and councils above come straight off those listings. I have left the firms unnamed on purpose, because the point is where they are based.
