Google's AI names this London watch strap maker first

A Rank on Google cover reading "Does Google's AI name your business?" above a Google search for "who's the best watch strap maker in london?"

Ask Google's AI for the best watch strap maker in London and, before a single normal result loads, it writes you an answer. It names a shortlist of makers, and the first one it puts forward is INRO London, ahead of every other atelier on the list. Ask the same AI who the best boiler installer in Bradford is, or about party bus hire in Newcastle, and two more businesses I work with come up the same way. Google's AI does not name everyone. It names the firms it already trusts, and this is what decides whether your name is on that list.

What Google's AI says about watch strap makers in London

When I ran that search, Google's AI Overview named INRO London first among the top makers in the city, and described it as a specialist in handcrafted, made-to-measure straps that collectors rate. Google does not hand the front of that list to everyone. Most firms are never named by the AI at all, let alone put at the top of it. The ones it does name are the ones it already trusts, and that is the whole game.

The same happens for a Bradford boiler fitter and a Newcastle party bus firm

This is not a luxury-London quirk. Ask Google's AI who the best boiler installer in Bradford is and it names Direct Boilers and Heating, a boiler company I have worked on, as one of the top-rated installers, with its own line as a fitter of affordable, energy-efficient combi boilers. That is the shortlist of names Google stands behind in Bradford, and most firms in the town are not on it. Ask it about party bus hire in Newcastle and Autograph Limousines comes up the same way, its 4.9 rating from 55 reviews shown, as one of the suppliers worth calling. A watch specialist, a boiler fitter and a party bus firm have nothing in common except the one thing that counts: each is the business Google already knows best in its patch.

Why the AI names these businesses and not the one down the road

Google's AI does not go hunting for a fresh set of favourites. It builds its answer from the same signals that decide who sits in the top three on the map: a complete and correct Google Business Profile, a steady flow of real reviews, the same name, address and phone number everywhere it looks, and a business that already ranks where people are searching. Get those right and you show up in both places, because they are read off the same evidence.

All three of these businesses own their maps. INRO holds the top three across 71.01% of its London map for bespoke Cartier watch straps. Direct Boilers is in the top three across 63.91% of his core Bradford map. Autograph is in the top three across 44.97% of the Newcastle map for party bus hire. The AI names them because Google already counts them as the answer.

How to become a business the AI puts forward

If your business is nowhere in that answer, it is almost never because the AI has not found you. It is because there is nothing for it to trust yet, and the fix is the same groundwork that wins the map. First, your Google Business Profile has to be complete and in the right categories, with every service written out, so Google knows exactly what you do and where. Second, reviews have to keep coming in, because recent, steady reviews count for more than a pile of old ones. Third, your name, address and phone number have to match everywhere they appear online, because the AI will not put a business forward when it cannot work out which details are the real ones.

That is the bulk of what we build for a gas engineer or boiler company, and it is what took Direct Boilers from invisible to named. I walked through how long that took, scan by scan, here.

How we checked this

The AI answers above are screenshots of Google's AI Overview and AI results for the searches named, taken straight from Google when we checked. I have put no date on them, because an AI answer can change from one week to the next, so the only claim here is that Google's AI named each business when we looked. The map figures are read off the Local Falcon scans we run for each business, every figure as printed on the scan, each one from a single search on the same 169-point grid.

If you want to know whether Google would name your business today, the quickest way is to look at where you stand on the map, because that is what the AI is reading from. Run a free scan of your own business and in about fifteen minutes you will see where you rank across your town, the three things holding you back, and what it costs to fix them. We build the whole foundation in seven days. Top 3 on Google in 90 days, or £500 back.
