Google Maps ranking in Renfrewshire: why a plumber owns Erskine but not Paisley

Rank on Google blog cover: a Renfrewshire plumber map scan, top 3 around Erskine and Bishopton, red across Paisley and Johnstone

If you run a trade in Renfrewshire, your Google Maps ranking reaches exactly as far as you have built it to, and no further. In the middle of October I ran a map scan for "plumber" right across the area, from Bishopton and Erskine in the north down through Paisley and Johnstone, and one firm sat first, second and third at point after point around its own patch, then dropped off the map the moment the grid crossed the M8. Here is how far it reached, why the line falls exactly where it does, and what that means if you are paying for ads while the map hands those calls to someone else.

What a plumber search shows right across Renfrewshire

I searched for "plumber" on a grid of 169 points spread across the whole of Renfrewshire, from the Clyde down past Johnstone, and watched where one Erskine firm turned up. Across the top of the map, over Erskine, Bishopton, Inchinnan and the Renfrew side, it was everywhere. Point after point showed it sitting first, second or third, a solid green core right around its own base. Drop down a few rows towards the M8 and Glasgow Airport and the numbers start to slide, five, then eight, then into the teens. Cross that line into Paisley and Johnstone and it falls off the map completely. Across the bottom third of the grid, 65 points covering all of Paisley and Johnstone, it was not placed in the top 20 at a single one of them. In total it showed up at 84 of the 169 points, and it was in the top 3 at 25 of them, every one of those clustered around home.

Map scan for "plumber" across Renfrewshire on 12 October 2026: top 3 around Erskine and Bishopton, not in the top 20 across Paisley and Johnstone

Map scan, 12 October 2026, "plumber", 13x13 grid, 3.5-mile radius, centred between Bishopton and Erskine. Green is a top-3 position, red is outside the top 20.

Why the map goes red south of the M8

This is Google doing the one job it is built for. When somebody searches for a plumber, Google looks at who is closest, who is set up for that exact area, and who has the strongest profile, then it fills the map with them. Around Erskine, that firm is the nearest strong option, so it wins. By the time you reach Paisley it is a different story. There are dozens of Paisley plumbers sitting right on top of those searchers, with Paisley addresses and Paisley reviews, and on this one search alone Google had 192 businesses to choose from. A firm sat a few miles north, on the wrong side of the motorway and the airport, does not get a look in. To Google, the M8 and the runway are the edge of where that firm is genuinely the handy choice.

How far a Google Maps ranking actually reaches

I get asked this all the time. Someone sees their first map scan, notices they are strong at home and thin two towns over, and asks whether we can get them ranking everywhere. The short answer is that the circle widens as far as you build it, and Google carries you to the edge of it the moment you earn it. As a rule of thumb, a local business can reasonably reach customers within about ten miles of its base. What it will not do is rank a Bishopton plumber in the middle of Glasgow, because nobody is crossing the city for a tap washer and Google knows it. The Erskine firm shows the gap exactly. Paisley sits well inside that ten mile circle, so the reach is there to be had, and the firm simply has not told Google it serves Paisley yet. That is a build decision, not a boundary.

What this means for a trade in Renfrewshire

So if you run a trade in Renfrewshire and you are already spending to keep the phone ringing, look at where your own map actually turns green. If it is only your own street and the next one along, you are leaving every search in the towns around you to whoever has bothered to claim them. Those map searches are the warmest leads you will ever get, because the person is looking to buy right now, and the calls cost you nothing once you are up there. Widening that green core is the exact job we do. It takes a Business Profile built to compete, pages on your site that say plainly which towns you serve and what you do in each, reviews that name those places, and the profile kept active week in, week out. That is the exact work that tells Google you belong in Paisley as well as Erskine, and it is what our local SEO in Renfrewshire page is built around. I ran the same kind of search for the trades around Bishopton, and you can read who actually shows up there.

How I ran the scan

The scan was a 13 by 13 grid of 169 points, set to a three and a half mile radius and centred between Bishopton and Erskine, run on 12 October 2026 for the search "plumber". At each point it records where one business sits in Google's local results, from first down to not shown in the top 20. Every number above is read straight off that scan: in the top 3 at 25 of the 169 points, found at 84, and not in the top 20 across the 65 points covering Paisley and Johnstone. I have left the firm unnamed on purpose, because the point is how far one honest local ranking actually stretches. If you want to see where your own business lands on that map today, the free ranking scan at Rank on Google shows you every point, names the towns that are already yours, and marks exactly where the reach stops. Then you know precisely what to widen.
